Exploding Cultures

This is an interactive venue for the issues, topics and assignments related to Exploding Cultures. Exploding Cultures is a graduate seminar focused on contemporary visual culture in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Among its key concerns are how visual culture is constructed through contemporary art, architecture and other visual media. We will explore cultural continuities and contrasts in the multiple "chinas" of Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan and will examine how visual culture intersects with nationalism, colonialism, transnational capitalism, hybridity and globalization. How does culture move and shift across national and geographic boundaries? How are we to grasp Chinese visual culture from a position outside the culture? What is the discourse in dealing with contemporary art in China in the west?
